George Hankovich
February 28, 2010MGySgt George Hankovich, USMC Ret., 89, of Hubert, died Sunday, February 28, 2010.
Graveside funeral services, with military honors, will be held at 2:00 PM on Wednesday at Coastal Carolina State Veterans Cemetery.
Mr. Hankovich was born October 20, 1920 in Mellen, Wisconsin. He was a veteran of World War II, seeing action in the campaigns of Guadalcanal, Guam and Iwo Jima. He was also a veteran of the Korean War, having served in the Chosin Reservoir, and retired with 28 years of service. He was presented the "Hardcore Warrior" award in 2008 for his service during 3 wars. An avid sportsman, George was a member of the Lejeune Rod and Gun Club for many years. He was also proud of his membership in the Chosin Few.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Mary Deane Hankovich; and a son, Joseph Michael Hankovich.
Survivors include his son Corky Hankovich and his wife, Donna of Wilmington; daughters, Lynn Greene and her husband, Arnold of Weddington and Barbara Merritt and her husband, John of Jacksonville; granddaughter, Rebecca Deane Ciccone and her husband, Michael of Charlotte; granddaughter, Nicki Hankovich and her fiance, Chris George of Leland; grandson, Mark Greene and his wife, Gabrielle of Cary; and one great-grandson, Mac.
The family will receive friends Wednesday afternoon from 1:00 - 1:45 PM prior to the graveside services at Jones Funeral Home, Jacksonville Chapel.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Lower Cape Fear Hospice Foundation, 1414 Physicians Drive , Wilmington, NC 28401.
