CHOCOWINITY - Mrs. Florence Elizabeth Dixon, 94, died Thursday, July 5, 2010, at the home of her daughter, Ruth, at 102 Newport Lane, Chocowinity, NC 27817. There will be a Funeral Mass to celebrate her life at 11:00 AM on Thursday, July 8, 2010 at the Infant of Prague Catholic Church in Jacksonville. Burial will follow in the New Bern National Cemetery. A Mass will be offered at Mother of Mercy Catholic Church at a later date.
Mrs. Dixon was born in Scranton, PA on October 15, 1915 to the late Thomas Edward and Martha Rose (Byler) Meadows.
She was a member of Infant of Prague Catholic Church in Jacksonville and attended Mother of Mercy Catholic Church in Washington, NC. She and her late husband, Bernard, were active in the Holy Innocents Catholic Church in Maysville, NC. She was a Sacristan and Bernard was the groundskeeper and custodian. They often greeted and fed visiting Priests and Seminarians.
She was devoted to her faith, her family and was active in her church and community. She never knew a stranger and always thought the best of others. She was a very humble person and the inspiration to family and acquaintances. She will be sorely missed.
On June 24, 1935, she married Bernard Van Dixon who preceded her in death on April 15, 1984. In addition to her parents and husband, she was also preceded in death by her brothers, Floyd and Joseph; grandson, George Deckard; granddaughter, Melissa Johnson; and a great-great-grandson, Luke Cobb.
Survivors include two sons, Leo of Jacksonville, NC, James of Jacksonville, FL; six daughters, Bernadette Muratore of Ocala and Dunnellon, FL, Ruth Cauvin of Chocowinity, NC, Amelia Cornn Canton, GA, Helen Johnson of Fredericksburg, VA, Connie Maides of Maysville, NC and Linda Deckard of Bloomington, IN; twenty-one grandchildren, twenty-five great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.
The family received friends from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM on Wednesday, July 7, 2010 at Jones Funeral Home in Jacksonville, NC.
