Stella- Barbara Eilene Merritt, 84, passed away Tuesday, November 26, 2019 at Carteret Health Care with her children and granddaughter by her side. She was born January 10, 1935 in Midland, MI daughter of the late, William and Flossie Ione Duel Kaweck.
A private memorial service will take place at a later date in her beloved hometown of Midland, MI.
Barbara cherished her family, friends, and hometown of Midland. She was a graduate of Midland High School and worked as a certified X-Ray Technician at Oakwood Hospital in Dearborn, MI. She married Robert C. Merritt and became a fulltime homemaker and mother, returning to Midland in 1968 to raise her two children. Like all the mothers in the Hannah Ct. neighborhood, Barbara not only raised her own children, but had a hand in the upbringing in all the youngsters who used her home and yard as neighborhood playground. When her friends, family, and all of the “Kids” who called her “mom” think of her, we remember the annual Hannah Ct. Easter egg hunts, the backyard apple cider making, Snickerdoodles, home cooked meals, the homemade ice-skating rink in the backyard, weekly horseback riding lessons at the Triple M Stables, summers playing on the beach at the Houghton Lake cottage, her graciousness in welcoming new neighbors, and of course, the monthly ladies birthday luncheons. Some of us recall her skills as a painter and seamstress because we are in possession of her paintings or handmade stuffed bunnies and prairie girl dolls, which she lovingly referred to as “My Girls”. The neighborhood folks talk of her green thumb and her front yard bloomed with impatiens all summer long and Hosta’s, Sedums, Daisy’s, and Snow on the Mountain graced the back. Barbara was truly well loved and will be missed by many.
She is survived by daughter, Kimberly O’Donohue (David) of Stella, NC; son, Jeffrey Merritt of New Hudson, MI; and granddaughter, Kathryn O’Donohue of Durham, NC.
She was preceded in death by brothers, Ralph, Earl and Dale Kaweck; and a sister, Etta Kaweck.
