Donnie Ray Stanley, 78, of Hubert, entered his eternal glory on Tuesday, November 26, 2019. Donnie was born on April 5, 1941 to the late, Bert and Senia Stanley, and was a lifelong resident of Hubert.
A funeral service will be held on Saturday, November 30, 2019 at 11:00 at Bear Creek Baptist Church with Rev. Terry Golden and Rev. Sandy Bain officiating. Burial at Piney Grove Baptist Church cemetery will follow the funeral service.
Donnie retired from civil service employment at Cherry Point Air Station following 30+ years of service. Many years before his retirement, he and his cherished wife, the late Barbara Ann Weeks Stanley, along with dear friend, the late Tom Horner, founded and began S & H Feed and Garden Center in Hubert. Several years later, Tom retired and Donnie and Barbara became the sole operators of the garden center. They worked together, along with their three children, and a family business emerged. Donnie found great enjoyment in gardening and thoroughly enjoyed the garden center. He especially enjoyed interacting with the customers, who meant so much to him. Donnie and Barbara worked alongside each other for many wonderful years until Barbara suffered a lengthy illness. Donnie became a devoted caregiver to Barbara until her passing in 2010.
Despite his tremendous grief and the beginning of his declining health, Donnie persevered. He resumed working at S & H as his health would allow, and in 2012 married Vera Bell. He often said how blessed he was to have met Vera, though their time together was short. As his health declined more in the last few years, Vera became Donnie’s devoted caregiver. Donnie was a strong, determined man and “fought the good fight.” His influence and impact on the lives of others lives on. S & H Feed and Garden Center continues to serve the community’s farming and gardening needs under the leadership of Donnie and Barbara’s son, Michael Stanley. And though Donnie was very proud of his role as owner and operator of S & H, his true devotion was to his Lord and his family. Donnie led his family by example, as a godly man, a devoted and faithful husband, a loving father, and an adoring grandfather. Donnie’s generosity, kindness and humor live on in those many people touched by his life. He left a legacy of true love.
