Ivins Popkin

November 2, 1935 ~ February 1, 2019 (age 83)

Ivins “Itchy” Popkin, 83, of Jacksonville, N.C., died Friday afternoon, February 1, 2019, at home with his wife, Diane, after a long period of failing health.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 o’clock a.m. on Monday, February 4, 2019, at B’nai Israel Synagogue, 2601 Chestnut Street, Wilmington 28405. Graveside services will follow.

Ivins affectionately nicknamed “Itchy” by his brothers was born in Trenton, N.J., on November 2, 1935, to Samuel Popkin and Katherine Barker Popkin.  Itchy was the youngest of six brothers who migrated to eastern N.C. in the early 1940s.  His brothers Ralph, Jerry, Alfred, Sidney and Marty were the sons of first and second-generation Russian immigrants.  All, except Ralph, came to Holly Ridge-Camp Davis from Trenton, N.J., in the early and mid-1940s to open Boomtown Grocery.

Ivins met Diane Feinberg of Charleston, S.C. in 1958. They married, moved to Jacksonville, N.C. and had sons, Keith Alan Popkin and Lance David Popkin.

Itchy was a philanthropist and humanitarian.  Itchy shared his time and resources with his family, friends and community.   He was kind and patient.  It was often noted that he would sit down and listen.  Itchy was generous his entire life and donated to many causes and expected no recognition or accolades.  He and his brothers inherited their generosity from their mother, Katherine Popkin.

His endeavors lead him to numerous awards such as the Community Man of the Year; Fabric of the Community Award; and the Jewish National Fund Award.  Itchy served as a director of Hope for the Warriors, was a trustee at Coastal Carolina Community College, and a member of the local board of First Citizens Bank.

Ivins is survived by his wife, Diane of Jacksonville; his sons, Keith Alan and wife, Elaine of Wilmington, N.C., Lance David and fiancé Tracy Browning of Wilmington, N.C.; his grandchildren, Thomas, Cordon and Spencer Witherington; and nephews, Jonathan Asher Popkin and fiancé Daveria Hutsell and their  son, Sidney Popkin, Gregory Scott and Victoria Popkin and children, Chase and Skylar Popkin, Todd Popkin, Matthew Popkin, Samuel Stuart and Suzanne Popkin and children Katherine and Sophia, Yale Marc and Linda D.
