Newport- Sarah (Sally) Elizabeth Marino, 81, passed away on Sunday, June 30, 2019 at Snug Harbor on Nelson Bay after a long battle with Alzheimer’s.
She was born September 19, 1937 in Pittsburgh and adopted by loving parents, Henry Alfred and Clara Belle (Gertis) Mallard.
A graveside service will be held Monday, July 8, 2019 at 10:00 AM at Gethsemane Memorial Park in Morehead City, NC with Rev. Ben Burrows officiating.
Sally spent her life dedicated to her family, friends, and community. She left her career in Pittsburgh to move to Fredonia, NY and raise a family. She was an active member of the Fredonia community, where she volunteered for countless organizations and was actively involved with First Presbyterian Church of Fredonia. She worked as a teacher’s aide and volunteered for the PTA and on the committee for The Fredonia High School Education Assistance Fund for years. She delivered Meals on Wheels. After surviving cancer in the early 90’s, she became an active member in a cancer support group, helping many others through their battle and participating in many fundraisers for the American Cancer Society. She was never one to say no to anyone who needed help. For fun, she belonged to a gourmet group and garden club. She moved to Newport, NC several years ago to be close to her son and enjoy time with her first grandchild.
She is survived by daughters, Melissa Marino (Eric Lund) of Mt. Pleasant, SC and Pamela LaForty (Brock) of Charlotte, NC; son, Mark Marina (Lisa) of Newport, NC; and grandchildren, Allison LaForty, Lauren LaForty, and Gabrielle Marino, all of whom will miss her but are relieved that she is at peace.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Edward J. Marino.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society at cancer.org
