It is with overwhelming pain and sorrow that we announce the passing of Thomas John Mahlum, 74, of Jacksonville, North Carolina, who passed away on Tuesday morning, January 14th, at his home.
Mr. Mahlum was born to John M. and Mary T. Mahlum on October 11, 1945 in St. Cloud, Minnesota. He was the brother of Richard (Hulda), Robert, Mary Mahlum Schmitt (John), Carol, John Jr. (Margie), and William.
Tom attended high school in Pittsburgh where he was a varsity athlete and Student Council President. After the family moved back to MN, Tom graduated from Cretin High School in St. Paul. He was a proud graduate of the University of Minnesota where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree majoring in Political Science.
Tom served proudly as a Captain in the United States Marine Corps from May 1968 to May 1971. He received both a Bronze Star with Valor and two Purple Hearts while serving in Vietnam.
After his discharge from the Marine Corp, he worked for the Minneapolis Housing Authority. Later he moved back to Jacksonville to start his real estate career. Son Daniel and daughter Beth were born during those early years.
Tom experienced considerable success as a realtor and shared his wisdom and knowledge with everyone who was willing to learn. He received the Distinguished Real Estate Instructor (DREI) designation for his accomplishments as an instructor reaching students throughout the state and across the country. Innovative, creative, and engaging in his approach, he mentored and guided dozens of new real estate agents who went on to successful careers themselves.
His involvement with his community was extensive including several years as a volunteer firefighter, Kiwanian and eventually the President of the Kiwanis Club where his service became legendary.
Tom married Joy Sermons Shaw, and Joy’s son John joined the family. Joy and Tom shared twenty-five years together full of adventure, travel, and managing an extensive real estate portfolio.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Mary; niece Anne-Elizabeth; and several beloved aunts, uncles and cousins.
He is survived by his wife Joy; son, Daniel (Nina); daughter, Beth (Joe); step-son, John Shaw of Anchorage, AK, eight grandchildren: Dylan, Jayden, Reagan, Riley, Lielanie, Mason, Cloey, and Phinn; sisters-in-law, Lynn Healy of Dallas, Shelley Basnight of Greenville, Debra Sermons of Greenville, and Pat Zimmerman (Tim) of Raleigh; Uncle Monte (Donna) Mahlum of St. Paul; Aunt Breta Conlon of Chicago; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
The family will receive friends on Thursday, January 16, 2020 at Trinity United Methodist Church, 301 Marine Blvd. from 5PM to 7PM.
A funeral service will be held on Friday, January 17, 2020 at 2PM at Trinity United Methodist Church.
