Betty Sue
Harden Uzzell
February 8, 1930 – November 4, 2024
Surf City – Betty Sue (Fats Baby) Harden Uzzell, 94, joined her beloved Jimmy (Zeke) with our Lord on Monday, November 4, 2024, at the Lower Cape Fear Life Care in Wilmington, NC.
A celebration of Betty's life will be held Monday, November 11, 2024, at 1 pm at Queens Creek Methodist Church.
Betty was born in Fitzgerald Georgia on February 8, 1930, to James and Dimple Harden.
Betty Sue was raised in a loving family in Fitzgerald, Ga. She had many adventures she lovingly spoke about being the only girl among 3 boys, James, Maurice, and Bobby. She excelled as a student and became the first woman student body president of South Georgia College at Douglas. The college president asked her to stay even if she could not pay. Her great attitude and ethics were needed on that campus. She was introduced to the great love of her life by her husband's brother, Russell Uzzell, married and moved to Hubert, North Carolina where she established herself as a joyous wife and mother, a dutiful daughter in law to "Memaw" Dollie R Uzzell, she loved so much. Family and church and doing things her way in the best interest of her husband and family became her life. She was organist, pianist and choir director for Queens Creek Methodist Church for over 40+ years. After Dollie Uzzell, Betty Sue chaired the Queens Creek Church cemetery fund, raising enough funds to make it a perpetual fund for everyone. After her husband, children, church and farm life, fishing hours on end at Scotch Bonnet Pier on Topsail Island was her passion. They were either about to bite or they were biting, and everyone wanted to be close to her line as she was singing and reeling them in. Very nearby, after facing a way too early widowhood, she built her home around her family. A beautiful waterfront home designed by her on Topsail Island resulted. It was always place of refuge and so much joy for family and friends.
She also enjoyed yearly visits to Myrtle Beach with family and her widowed girlfriends. She laughed and said no married women, "they cramped our style". Always fun loving. She loved to travel. Jerusalem, Germany, Switzerland, with different groups.
England, Jamaica, Turks and Caicos with her daughter Ginger plus mountain trips.
Bermuda, St Martin, California with her daughter, DeeDee.
Betty Sue was a great example of stewardship to her children and always provided selflessly for others. She worked with her younger son Roger at All Star Auto Sales and became a wise adviser and life coach for so many who passed her way. Teaching them and us to always do right, love God and family, and that perseverance is key.
In addition to her parents, Betty is preceded in death by her husband and only true love, James Milton Uzzell Jr; daughter, Dee Dee Uzzell; brothers, James Harden and Maurice Harden.
She is survived by her children, Milton Uzzell (Jenny), Roger Uzzell (Terri), and Ginger Webb (Joe Brewer); brother, Bobby Harden; grandchildren, Jimmy Uzzell, David Uzzell (Crystal), Kylie Parkhurst, Samantha Benfield (Saint), Chase Webb, Sara Massey (Drew), and Chandler Uzzell (Hayley); and great-grandchildren, James (JV) Uzzell IV and Oaklye Rae Parkhurst.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in honor of Betty H Uzzell to the Queens Creek United Methodist cemetery perpetual fund, QCMC p.o.box 398 Hubert NC 28539.
