RICHLANDS  -  Betty Jean Norton peacefully passed away at Onslow Memorial Hospital on January 10, 2025, at the age of 71, surrounded by her loved ones.

She is survived by her daughter, Tammy Lynn Hamilton of Richlands, NC; her son, Robert James Downing of Jacksonville, NC; her sister, Rose Marie Rose of Union City, PA; and her brother, Kim Wayne Edwards of Goldsboro, NC. She also leaves behind a daughter-in-law, seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren, all of whom she cherished deeply.

Betty Jean was preceded in death by her parents, John Allen and Mary Elizabeth Edwards, as well as her brother, August Allen Edwards.

Known affectionately as "Jean" by her close family and friends, Betty Jean was a loving and generous soul who brought warmth and kindness to all who knew her. Whether called Betty or Jean, she was known for her unwavering support, empathy, and the love she offered to those around her.

Born on June 24, 1953, in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, Betty Jean dedicated much of her life to her career as a talented baker for Demoulas Market Basket. After retiring, she relocated to Richlands, North Carolina to be closer to her immediate family.

In her retirement, Betty Jean found joy in simple pleasures—spending warm, sunny days gardening and planting, solving puzzles, and enjoying her favorite TV shows. She took great pride in her garden, finding peace and fulfillment in nurturing the plants she loved.

Betty Jean will be laid to rest in Orchard Grove Cemetery, Kittery, Maine, at a date to be determined. Her memory will live on in the hearts of her family and friends, who will forever miss her gentle spirit and generous heart.
