Obituary

Captain Elizabeth "Betty" O'Neill, U.S. Navy Nurse Corps Retired, 85 of Jacksonville, NC, passed away Feb. 24 in Beaufort, SC.

A graveside service will be held on March 4th at 10 AM at Coastal Carolina State Veteran's Cemetery of Jacksonville, NC with Navy Honors.

She served her country honorably with the United States Navy as a Navy Nurse for 25 years of which four of those years were served in overseas assignments in Guam, Japan, Philippines and Vietnam. While in Vietnam in 1970 she was assigned to Station Hospital DANANG, MACV, Saigon and the Hospital Ship USS Sanctuary AH17.

Betty was a remarkable person and will be truly missed by family and friends. She touched many lives and always encouraged others to achieve to their fullest potential. She will be remembered for her love of music and ability to play all types of instruments including the piano, organ, banjo, etc. all by ear.

She volunteered with the Onslow Community Ministries which included the Soup Kitchen and Christmas Cheer and was a lifetime member of the VFW #9133. She was also an active member of many other fraternal and civic organizations.

She leaves behind her sister Anne Hirshmann, 8 nieces and nephews and their children plus many cousins.

The family asks that in lieu of flowers, memorial donations should be made to your favorite charity or to Infant of Prague Catholic Church in Jacksonville, NC.
