1936-2026

It is with deep sadness, but a great sense of peace, that the family of Carol Riggs Howard announce her passing on the morning of February 6, 2026, at the age of 89, after a long battle with dementia. Her family knows that she has finally made it to her heavenly home and that she is rejoicing with the angels.  A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, February 10, 2026, at 10 am at Bethlehem Baptist Church with Reverend Damon Williamson officiating. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service. Burial will follow the service at Onslow Memorial Park.

Carol was a lifelong, faithful member of Bethlehem Baptist Church where she served in many roles over the years. Her greatest joys were her children and grandchildren. "Granny Carol" was very involved in her family's lives and was loved by everyone.

Carol is survived by her loving husband of 72 years, Robert "Bobby" Howard of Jacksonville; son, Robert Carlton Howard (Lisa) of Jacksonville; daughter, Vickie Howard Whaley (Forrest) of Richlands; grandchildren, Kyle Jarman (Jacqui) of Sneads Ferry, Craig Howard (April) of Jacksonville, Kelsey Metts of Richlands; six great-grandchildren; Carly, Caroline, Tanner, Brookelynn, Sam, and Hannah; sister, Betty Moss (Bernard) of Jacksonville, as well as several nephews, nieces and extended family members.

Carol is preceded in death by her parents, Russell Riggs and Ruth Taylor Riggs Mills; sister, Wilma Money; brother, Ronald Riggs; and grandson, Robert Ashley Howard.

The family extends a special thank you to Heritage Rest Home of Richlands, who quickly became family and took wonderful care of our mother, Gentiva Hospice of Swansboro, and all the many others who have provided love and support over the years.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be given to the Bethlehem Baptist Church Family Life Center Fund.
