Obituary

Charles Norman Jiles, 93 PAUMA VALLEY, CA -- Charles Norman Jiles passed away in Jacksonville, NC on Monday, December 9, 2024. He was the second of three children born September 3, 1931 in Costa Mesa, CA to Everett and Kathryn Jiles. Norman was a 1956 graduate of Stanford University with a BS in Engineering after having taken some time off from his education to join the US Navy. After graduation he worked on a small team as an engineer that was instrumental in the development of RAM (Random Access Memory).  For several years Norm split his days between being an engineer and working with his dad on the family orange ranch (Jiles Ranch) in Pauma Valley, CA until he finally left the corporate world to focus on his true passion, being a full-time farmer.

He was a talented athlete at Santa Ana High School in both basketball and track and field and was the 31st CIF State T&F Champion1949 in the high jump and then went on to Stanford University competing in the high jump of whom it was said he was a "top performer" with leaps up to 6'5".  Additionally, he loved to snow ski, scuba dive, swim, and play tennis and competed in various men's tennis leagues in San Diego.

He was predeceased by his wife of 52 years, Mary-Lee Jiles, and is survived by sons, Rhett (Jackie) Jiles of Homeland Calif., Everett (Kristin) Jiles and Eric (Nicole) Jiles both of Front Royal, VA; daughters, Joyce Thatcher and Kathryn (Tom) Custer both of Jacksonville, NC; 14 grandchildren, many great-grandchildren and one sister, Dorothy (Jiles) Hamilton of Friendswood, TX.
