JACKSONVILLE - Mr. Charles Waddell Summerlin passed away peacefully at home Monday, February 23, 2015. Funeral services will be held at 3:00 PM on Thursday at First Presbyterian Church with Dr. John Kerr officiating. Burial will follow at Onslow Memorial Park.
He was born on June 23, 1925 in Wilson, N.C. He graduated from Durham High School where he met the love of his life, Catherine Burton Teague. Upon graduation from High School in 1943 he joined the Navy and proudly served his country during World War II. After returning home from WWII he attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where he earned a B.S. Degree in Business Administration. Mr. Summerlin was proud to be a UNC Tar Heel and was a lifetime member of the UNC Alumni Association and Alpha Kappa Psi Business Fraternity. After graduation from UNC he learned the Insurance Business in Rhode Island, Raleigh and Morehead City.
Mr. and Mrs. Summerlin moved their young family to Jacksonville in 1957 and he opened Summerlin Insurance and Realty which is still in business today. He was a member of the American Institute of Property and Liability Underwriters and a Certified Residential Real Estate Appraiser. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Jacksonville. Mr. Summerlin lived his life for his faith, his family, helping others through civic organizations and watching the Tar Heels play. Before retiring he loved to travel yearly, with Catherine, to Florida for Baseball's Spring training camp. As long as he was physically able he enjoyed playing golf, which was one of his favorite pastimes. He was also a member of the National Sojourners, past Master of the Masonic Lafayette Lodge No. 83 and a former US Commissioner.
Mr. Summerlin was preceded in death by his parents, James Thomas Summerlin and Lena Buck Summerlin; brothers, Ralph, Thomas and Jasper Summerlin; and sisters, Odie Parnell, Jean Dorman and Pauline Rogers.
He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Catherine Teague Summerlin; daughter, Jane Sawyer (James) of Swansboro; and son, Charles Waddell Summerlin, Jr. (Donna) of Jacksonville. He is also survived by the pride and joy of his life; grandchildren, Shelly McGirt Yarbrough (Trace) of Grifton, NC, Cathy McGirt James of Jacksonville, Kevin McGirt of Beaufort, Caroline Summerlin Lanier (Andrew) of Jacksonville and Charles Teague Summerlin of Jacksonville as well as six great-grandchildren, Jack and Anna Yarbrough, Ava and Spencer James, Summerlin McGirt and Charles Porter Lanier. Also surviving Mr. Summerlin are his brother, Lyman Summerlin of Stanley, NC and sisters, Joyce Pinnix of Reidsville, NC and Louise Rice of Greensboro, NC.
In lieu of flowers the family prefers memorials be made to the Shriners Hospitals For Children, 950 West Faris Road, Greenville, SC 29605 or Onslow Country Home Health and Hospice, 4024 Richlands, Hwy., Jacksonville, NC 28540.
The family will receive friends Thursday afternoon, prior to the service, from 1:00 - 2:30 PM at the church.
