Donna Rae
Dickerson
July 10, 1938 – June 21, 2025
Donna Rae Dickerson, born July 10th, 1938, in Cook County, Illinois, made her completion of life on June 21st, 2025, and went home to be with her creator & savior. In her final moments of life here on Earth, she was surrounded in love by her daughter, grandson, and longtime family friend Brian O'Hayer.
Donna never met a stranger, and if they were, they weren't for long. The name Donna means "lady" and she was 100% a representative of the name she was given by her parents.
Donna began her life journey in Illinois, eventually settling in Savannah, GA., for a duration of 53 years before finishing out her life in North Carolina. She touched so many lives throughout her 86 years, but most notably that of Lionel D. Dickerson during her time in Georgia. They met while he was working in a local bowling alley while in the United States Coast Guard and her in the nursery. They were wed on May 14th, 1971, and were together devoted in marriage for 35 beautiful years!
She started her career in insurance working for Travelers and finished it out as a devoted medical assistant at St. Joseph's Hospital. She even stayed on as a long-standing volunteer well past retirement. She was known as your local "Avon" lady, serving tirelessly at making Savannah ladies beautiful for over 25 years. She was an integral part of her part of her community while a long-term resident of Savannah and a devoted member of her local church, St. Francis Cabrini. She committed many tireless hours as a Girl Scout mom, selling cookies, camping, and being a part of forming the future of many young ladies in the local troop, mainly that of her daughter. Later in life she became an avid supporter of all aspects of her daughter & grandson's daily life and events, always ready to lend a helping hand. Her friends, family, and community were blessed to have her. The commitment to all the things she valued is long, but God knows the contributions she made to this world.
Her greatest role was that of mother, grandma, and friend. She was kind, compassionate, giving (to a fault), but most of all, possessed a heart of gold which held love for everyone she valued in her life. The presence she created will leave a hole that anyone who knew her could never fill.
She is preceded in death by her loving and devoted husband Lionel Dickerson, her parents Raymond & Rose Kummer, her stepmother Eleanor Kummer, her aunts Ange and Frances, her uncles Johnny, Sam, and Mike, cousins Jane, Mary, Kathy, and Janet, and her stepdaughter Karen Dickerson. She is survived by her daughter Tracy L. Dickerson Wilson & grandson Nicholas R. Wilson of North Carolina, her brother Thomas P. Kummer and sister-in-law & longtime friend Jill A. Kummer of Illinois, and her stepdaughter Robin Dickerson Dillon.
Special thanks to her Savannah neighbor and loving friend Amy Taylor. A special thanks as well to her long-term care providers Penny White, Sherrida Edwards, and Julie Mayberry. Her life was forever changed by her team at Lifecare which included Mary, Karen, Trammel, Chaplains Susan and Genoia, as well as many others.
She was a survivor and strong advocate of breast cancer awareness after overcoming her personal battle26 years ago. Illness may have taken her health and later in life some of her memories, but it was never able to steal the love that her heart held for the world. She will be greatly missed. To know her was to love her.
