Obituary

Elbert "Lawson" Poling III, 64, of Maple Hill, entered into eternal rest on August 6 at Lower Cape Fear LifeCare.

A proud veteran of the United States Navy, Lawson served with honor and distinction for 8 years in two tours of duty, including combat service during Operation Desert Storm. Accolades received include multiple sea service deployment ribbons, the Southwest Asia service medal, meritorious unit awards, the defense service medal, the Navy achievement medal, two battle efficiency ribbons for excellence in combat readiness, and the good conduct medal. Lawson's dedication and valor earned him the respect of his fellow sailors and the enduring gratitude of his country.

Born on January 31, 1961, in Parris Island, SC, Lawson answered the call to serve with integrity and courage. His commitment to service went beyond his uniform. Following Lawson's time in the Navy, he was employed by and retired from Forvis Mazars, LLP, where he continued to bring a sense of duty and loyalty that extended to every area of his life. Lawson will be remembered as a steady presence, wise mentor, and devoted brother. He was known for strength of character and a sometimes-loud sense of humor, always living with purpose and a deep respect for the freedoms he helped protect.

Lawson was predeceased by his parents, Elbert Lawson Poling, Jr. and Edith Burnette Spear, and brother Rick Poling. Left to cherish his memory are siblings, Faye New (Rick) of Jacksonville, Debbie Wiseman of Maple Hill, Judi Marshall (Don) of Richlands, and Ed Brumfield of Laurinburg, along with several nieces, nephews, cousins, and a host of friends whom he loved like family.

Following escort by the NC Patriot Guard to Coastal Carolina State Veteran's Cemetery in Jacksonville, NC, Lawson will receive full military honors on Friday, August 15, 2025, at 2pm. Friends and fellow service members are invited to join in honoring his life and legacy.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the NC Patriot Guard Riders, https://patriotguard.org/nc, or a veteran's organization of your choice in Lawson's name.

Fair winds and following seas, sailor. You served with honor. You are relieved.
