Jacksonville- George Edward Busfield, Jr. (75), passed peacefully Saturday, October 24, 2026, with his loved ones by his side. Graveside services with military honors will be held on Thursday, October 29, 2026, at 12 noon at Coastal Carolina State Veterans Cemetery.
George was born February 3, 1951, in Darby, Pennsylvania to the late May and George Busfield, Sr. George and his family then relocated to New Jersey where he grew up in Ocean City, NJ. He attended Glassboro State College in Glassboro, NJ where he graduated with a B.A. in Industrial Arts. He was commissioned as a Second Lt in 1973 and completed flight training in June 1974. He married his wife Mary Lynn Busfield on June 15, 1974. George "Opie", went on to serve 27 years in the Marines flying the
CH-46 and T28s. One of his favorite duty stations was a flight instructor in Pensacola, Florida. Opie described it as being a great time, where he got to mold future pilots and fly all the time. George always wanted to fly and he was grateful for the opportunity the Marines gave him to do just that. George stated, "No matter what your job is, the word Marine goes with a higher quality of individual." George flew and led his marines with that attitude. George retired and stayed in Aviation by continuing to teach marine pilots while instructing the V-22 Ospery at the Air Station in Jacksonville, NC. His love for flying, aviation and the marines never wavered.
George in his retirement loved playing golf, wood working, drinking Diet Coke and eating green M&Ms. He could be found any given Sunday golfing with his buddies. He continued to create furniture for his grandchildren and support his family through Hallmark movie marathons and laughter that will be missed and some yelling.
Even though the military didn't assign them, Geroge and Mary Lynn had 2 children. Kevin Busfield and Julie Carrozza (Antonio). He is survived by his wife, children and his grandchildren: Rand, Leonardo, Lorenzo, Elliana, Aspen. Plus his favorite granddog, Boone.
He is preceded in death by his sister, May Volkman.
He was a great friend, a great Marine, and a superb pilot; but most of all he was a great human being, who will be missed.
A reception following the graveside service at the Jacksonville Country Club in Jacksonville, NC.
