George Thomas
Reiter
July 2, 1948 – August 24, 2025
JACKSONVILLE - George Thomas Reiter, 77, of Jacksonville, passed away Sunday, August 24, 2025 at Hospice House in Greenville, NC. He was surrounded by his beloved family. Visitation will be held at 4 PM, followed by the Funeral service at 5 PM on Thursday, September 4, 2025 at Jones Funeral Home, Jacksonville Chapel. Following the service, George will be cremated and interred at Coastal Carolina State Veterans Cemetery at a later date.
Mr. Reiter was born on July 2, 1948, in East Orange, New Jersey to the late George Thornton Reiter and Cecelia Genevieve Reiter. Shortly after, the family moved to the quiet and very rural Pleasant Mount, Pennsylvania where he grew up hunting, fishing, farming, and tinkering with anything mechanical. He graduated from Forest City Regional High School in 1966. Immediately after graduation, he answered the call to serve his country and enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. He proudly served in Vietnam, where he was wounded in action and became a three-time recipient of the Purple Heart.
After retiring as a Master Sergeant from his military service, George carried on his love for mechanics and the outdoors. He continued to hunt and fish, even becoming a Commercial Fisherman for many years. He also continued to serve his community as a member of the Military Order of the Purple Heart Chapter #642, The American Legion Post 265 (you may remember him at the ticket booth for the Onslow County Fair for many years), and the Corpsmen Memorial Foundation. In his free time, you could always find him at Hospital Point with his fishing buddies trying to catch that BIG ONE.
Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Alice; his daughter, Christine (Fidel Ramirez) Reiter Ramirez; grandson, Thomas; granddaughter, Shaye; and bonus grandsons, Alec and Dylan; his daughter, Leslee (James Tascione) Reiter; granddaughter, Lauren; and bonus grandsons, Vincent and Gavin; his sister, Dianne (Frank) Emick; niece, Juliann; and nephew, Scott. We cannot forget his beloved pug, Scarlett; and many granddogs, grandkittehs; cousins; and dear friends.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks memorials be made to the Myasthenia Gravis Foundation of America at myasthenia.org/donatenow or at (800) 541-5454.
