Obituary

SNEADS FERRY  -  Glenn Dale Gore, 69, of Sneads Ferry, NC, passed away unexpectedly at his residence on July 7, 2025. Born on September 6, 1955, in Conway, SC, Glenn was raised by his loving parents, Nola and Donald Battes. His early years were spent in Little River, SC — where he had cherished memories running the docks with his Uncle Neal Juel and Cousin Greg Gore — then moving to Hollywood, Florida; and Madison, Ohio. A 1973 graduate of Madison High School, Glenn soon enlisted in the United States Navy, where he proudly served as a Corpsman attached to the U.S. Marine Corps for 13 years.

It was during his time stationed at Camp Lejeune that Glenn developed a deep love for the North Carolina coast — a place that would eventually become his permanent home. There, he put down roots and raised his sons, Craig and Keith, from his first marriage.

After his honorable discharge, Glenn settled on Topsail Island and returned to his culinary roots. Raised in a family steeped in the restaurant business — both his father and maternal grandmother owned successful establishments — Glenn followed in their footsteps. In 1986, he opened the Rusty Scupper, quickly making a name for himself with his fresh coastal cuisine and warm hospitality. Using cherished family recipes from Donald Battes and Mary Juel, along with his own creations, Glenn built a reputation that locals and visitors still remember fondly today.

In 1988, Glenn married the love of his life, Sherry Cavenaugh. Together, they shared years of happiness. Hurricane Fran tragically destroyed the Rusty Scupper in 1996. Just two years later, Glenn suffered the heartbreaking loss of Sherry to cancer.

Glenn spent the next three decades working for New River Marina and as a shrimper, but his favorite role was the 20 years he dedicated to Coastal Dredging. He was proud to be part of the "family" there and took great ownership in every task he was assigned. No matter the job, Glenn was always connected to the water and the coast he loved.

He will be remembered as a guy who never met a stranger, always made you feel special, and would do anything for you. He made you laugh, had the best sayings, and rarely ended an encounter without telling you "I love you!" He was clever and artistic, often turning discarded objects into one-of-a-kind works of art. He loved working on boats and took great pride in restoring them, whether it be an old sailboat, a wooden skiff, or a dredge. His craftsmanship, imagination and creativity shone through in everything he touched.

He surfed the ocean waves, fished the tidal creeks, and shrimped the coastal waters. The one constant in Glenn's life was his deep and enduring love for the sea.

Glenn was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Sherry Cavenaugh; his mother, Nola Mortensen; his father, Donald Battes; and his brother, Norman Battes.

He is survived by his sons, Craig and Keith Gore; his grandchildren, Abella and Frederick; his sisters, Donna Carroll (Brian), Shelly Alexander (Dave Paulk), and Linda Battes Lane (Jim); and his brother, Donald Battes, Jr. He is also survived by many special nieces and nephews, cousins, aunts, uncles, dear friends, and a community he truly loved.

The family would especially like to recognize his Gore Kinfolk, who remained an important part of his life, the Jonathan Yopp family, and special friends Melissa and Arnold Maloney.
