Obituary for Harvey Lee Dail
October 12, 1937 – August 2, 2025

Harvey Lee Dail, 87, of Jacksonville, NC, passed away peacefully on August 2, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of faith, integrity, and deep devotion to his family and friends.

Born in Duplin County on October 12, 1937, Harvey spent nearly his entire life in Jacksonville, graduating from Jacksonville High School in 1957. He was known for being honest, trustworthy, hard-working, kind, caring, faithful, and dependable — values he lived out daily in both his personal and professional life.

Harvey was a man of strong Christian faith, having read through the Bible many times and served faithfully as a deacon and Sunday school teacher. While a member of several churches over the years, he was especially devoted to Enon Chapel Baptist Church, where he worshipped and served for over 40 years.

He worked many jobs throughout his life, but two stood out as favorites: his early years as a fireman with the Jacksonville Fire Department and his long career with Carolina Telephone and Telegraph (later Sprint). He particularly enjoyed the training programs in Raleigh and took pride in learning and sharing his knowledge. He retired after more than 30 years of service.

Harvey could fix just about anything and was the kind of man you could always count on. After retiring, he and his beloved wife Jean enjoyed traveling across the 48 continental states by RV, and they also made special trips to Alaska, Hawaii, Canada, Scotland, and Ireland — making memories that became cherished stories.

A master of whole hog BBQ, Harvey loved cooking it for family and friends, always serving it with his own secret sauce. His favorite pastimes included cheering for the Tar Heels, listening to the Statler Brothers, and enjoying simple Southern treats like Nabs and Moon Pies.

Above all, Harvey loved Jesus, his wife Jean, and his family. He was preceded in death by his parents, Burney and Eunice Dail; his sister, Lillian Dail Potter; and his son-in-law, Phill Farney.

Harvey is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Jean Morton Dail; his two daughters, Melissa Dail Farney of Jacksonville, NC, and Tessy Dail Malone (Robb) of Raleigh, NC; and his three cherished grandchildren, Owen, Brody, and Abby Malone.

In his final act of giving, Harvey was an organ donor, with his skin donated to benefit burn victims at UNC — a fitting gesture from a man who lived his life in service to others.

Harvey Lee Dail lived fully, loved deeply, and left this world a better place for having been in it. He will be deeply missed but joyfully remembered.

A viewing will be held on Thursday, August 7, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Jones Funeral Home in Jacksonville. A funeral service will follow on Friday, August 8, at 12:00 p.m., also at Jones Funeral Home. Graveside burial will immediately follow at Onslow Memorial Park.
