Henrietta "Cris"
Crist Koonce
February 29, 1928 – September 3, 2025
Henrietta (Cris) Crist Koonce passed away peacefully on September 3 surrounded by children and grandchildren. Family will be receiving friends at the home of David and Catharine Koonce. The visitation will be on Friday, September 12 from 6-8 PM at Jones Funeral Home on Chaney Avenue followed by a Celebration of Life on Saturday, September 13 at 11AM at St. Anne's Episcopal Church at 711 Henderson Drive in Jacksonville. There will be a reception in the Parish Hall after the service.
Cris was born on February 29, 1928, in New York City. She was the daughter of Irene and Harry Crist of Cyprus and was the first generation born in the United States. Cris was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Jack, and her brother, Takey Crist. She is survived by her children: Cal Koonce (Tina), Kathrin Koonce, David Koonce (Catharine) and Amy Stroud (Steve) and her sister-in-law, Kay Brown. Her grandchildren include Lara Dick (Jonathan), Maggie Stroud, Sally McMurry (Avery), Jack Koonce (Katie), Alex Koonce (Claire), Will Taylor (Rayshall) and Jacob Taylor (Brittany). Great grandchildren include Claire Dick, Irene Dick, Mary Dick, Leah McMurry, Anna McMurry, Alley Taylor, Carter Taylor, and Landon Taylor.
Cris graduated from Jacksonville High School and attended WCUNC in Greensboro at the age of 15. She volunteered with the American Cancer Society, the Crisis Care Line, and was a charter member of the local hospice organization. She was a member of the Cosmopolitan Book Club, the Business and Professional Women's Club, and Saint Anne's Episcopal Church where she served as the first woman to be Senior Warden.
Cris, affectionately known as YiaYia, enjoyed duplicate bridge, Mah Jongg, daily Wordle, and in recent years jigsaw puzzles. She was an avid reader and loved a "well-written" book. She loved intelligent conversations related to the world, the news, and of late had become increasingly interested in AI. YiaYia loved visits from children and grandchildren and greeted everyone she met with a warm smile and genuine interest. Her true kindness and unconditional love were felt by all who knew her.
