Master Sergeant Herbert Sam Fender, USMC Ret., aged 82, passed away peacefully at Scott's Hill Medical Center. Funeral services will be held on Friday, September 18, 2026, at 12:30 PM at Centerview Baptist Church. Burial with military honors will immediately follow at Coastal Carolina State Veterans Cemetery.
Born and raised in a small town in Texas, Herbert was a man of immense dedication, humor, and heart. He proudly served his country in the United States Marine Corps for 27 years, 9 months, and 27 days, retiring at the distinguished rank of Master Sergeant. Even after his long and honorable military service, Herbert’s work ethic never wavered. He continued to serve his local communities by delivering newspapers for The Globe and later sharing his hands-on skills as the maintenance man for the Park West Apartments. He was truly a man of multiple talents who simply never knew how to stop helping others.
Beyond his uniform and hard work, Herbert was a remarkably humble and kind-hearted soul, always willing to help anyone at the drop of a dime. He was a true character who brought joy wherever he went; with Herbert around, there was simply never a dull moment. He had a passion for discovering new places to eat and loved spending his time out on the water fishing. His quick wit will forever be remembered by his family, especially by his grandson, Justin, whom he loved to tease on the water—laughing and reminding him, "You must know something I don’t, because you out here tryna tree fish! There aren't no fish up there!"
Herbert was reunited in heaven with his beloved wife, Loretta Fender, who passed away almost two years ago. He leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and service. He is survived by his son, Errett Dwayne Fender; his daughter, Jane Nanette Dunlap; and his grandson, Justin Jamol Fender.
His passing leaves a void in our hearts that can never be filled, but he left us with too many beautiful memories to count. He will never be forgotten. Rest easy, Devil Dog. Jesus has you now—sit back and enjoy the ride. After a while, crocodile.
The family will receive friends on Thursday, September 17, 2026, from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at Jones Funeral Home, Jacksonville.
