Hisako Zamami Trowell, 81, passed away peacefully on Monday, September 10, 2018 with her daughter, Kiko Sun, at her side.  Funeral services will be on Monday, September 24 at 10:30 AM at Jones Funeral Home, Jacksonville Chapel.  A burial will follow at Coastal Carolina State Veterans Cemetery.

Hisako, an Okinawan, was born in Saipan on August 20, 1937, one of several children to the late Soushin and Hide Zamami.

During World War II, Hisako and her family were evacuated to Okinawa prior to the Battle of Saipan.  Hisako lived in Okinawa until she came to the United States in 1963.  She was a spouse of a US Navy Corpsman and initially lived in Florida for five years.  Since 1968, Jacksonville, NC has been her home.  Hisako was socially active in the local Japanese and Okinawan community.  She will be remembered for her kindness, generosity, and infectious laugh.

Hisako was preceded in death by her husband, Willie J. Trowell and her brother Yoshihiko Zamami.  She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, William "Willie" Trowell, and Vicky; her daughter and son-in-law, Kiko Sun and Gary Smith; granddaughter Leilani Trowell-DeTurck and Steffan; and granddaughter Melora Trowell; sister and husband Kiyoko Nakayama and Koichi; sister and husband Sachiko Oyakawa and Choshou; sister and husband Miyoko Wright and George; brother and wife Yoshimasa Zamami and Masako.

The family will receive friends Sunday afternoon, September 23 from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM. at Jones Funeral Home, 303 Chaney Avenue, Jacksonville, NC.
