Obituary

With heavy hearts we announce the unexpected passing of Janice Anne Hopfer Humphrey, a one-of-a-kind human being and beautiful soul, on February 6, 2025. She was 75.

Janice was born on April 12,1949 in Norfolk, Virginia with a heart full of kindness and a spirit that could light up any room, to A.O and Phyllis Hopfer. Her father's military career brought the family to Onslow County and eventually Swansboro became their permanent home.

Janice, affectionately called Jan or Jana by those who loved her most, had a passion for life and enjoyed a variety of activities. On any given day, she would make her rounds, picking up trinkets and treasures, excited to share what she found on her travels. She made friends everywhere she went and lived her life being kind to others.

Janice had an unwavering love for horses and many fond memories were made during the times she spent with them. She also had a deep appreciation for plants, Swansboro soccer, and Coca-Cola, her favorite treat to enjoy while sharing stories and spending time with family and friends. She was a never-ending source of random facts, life lessons, and witty remarks. Even in hard times Janice remained steadfast in her belief that brighter days would come. Her determination and positive attitude contributed to her surviving breast cancer.

Janice was a loving mother, grandmother, and cherished friend. She is survived by her daughters Cynthia Humphrey (Aaron Truett) and Samantha Coffel; granddaughter and bestest friend Emersyn Humphrey; grandsons Corey Humphrey and Aaron Truett Jr.; brothers Arthur Hopfer and Donald Hopfer; sisters Joanie Hawkinson (Kris) and Dayna Frazelle; nephews Josh Hopfer and James Frazelle; surrogate family Kim Godwin and her kids Tylor, Bishop, Ian, and Kamryn; all her people at Ekklesia, and her cat Ruthie.  She was preceded in death by her parents, her daughter Christina, and her nephew Jason Hopfer.

Janice cherished the time she spent with her family and her legacy will live on in the love and laughter they continue to bring to those around them. She will be remembered for her warm heart, her love of life, and her commitment to her family and friends.

Janice touched the lives of everyone who knew her and her spirit will endure in the hearts of all who loved her.

A memorial service to celebrate Janice's life will be held at a later date. If you would like to honor a life so beautifully lived, consider making a donation to the Carteret Humane Society or any horse rescue in memory of Janice. Sharing a Coca-Cola with a friend or having a visit with someone you haven't seen in a while would also be Janice approved.
