Obituary

On April 13, 2025, Jeffry "Jeff" Walsh, 68, of Jacksonville, North Carolina, slipped gently from this world at UNC Chapel Hill Memorial Hospital, cradled by the love of his family after a valiant battle with cancer. Though his loss leaves an ache in the hearts of all who knew him, Jeff's radiant spirit—his laughter, wisdom, and boundless love—will forever light the lives of those he touched.

Jeff was the heart and soul of his family, the devoted husband to Katheryn, his beloved wife of 46 years, whose shared journey was woven with joy, resilience, and unwavering partnership. He was a guiding star to his children, Sara and Jeff, pouring his love into every moment, from teaching them chess to sharing life's quiet lessons. His three sisters, Cheryl, Nina, and Kim, will carry the warmth of his brotherly bond, while his dear friends, Del and Debbie Coffey and James Lingard, mourn the loss of a man whose humor and loyalty made every gathering brighter.

A proud Marine veteran, Jeff served with honor before dedicating 30 years to Marine Corps Community Services, where his steadfast commitment uplifted those around him. Yet it was his passion for chess that truly defined his spirit. Around the board, Jeff was a master and mentor, sharing strategies and stories with his children, friends, and the local chess community. His legacy in the Marine Corps chess circles, both at home and abroad, is one of camaraderie and brilliance, where he taught not just moves but the beauty of patience and foresight.

Though Jeff's absence leaves a void no words can fill, his love endures in every memory, every chessboard, and every heart he touched. He will be missed beyond measure, but his light will shine on, guiding us all.

The family will not be holding a service or funeral.  He is going home to his family in Washington.  A celebration of his life will be held at a future date.
