Joan
Rothermel
Jun 6, 1940 — Jul 27, 2026
JACKSONVILLE - Joan Marie Freudiger Rothermel, 86, of Jacksonville, died Monday, July 27, 2026 at her home. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 AM on Monday, August 3, 2026 at Our Lady of Loreto Catholic Church at MCAS New River Chapel, with Rev. William Waun officiating. Burial will follow at Coastal Carolina State Veterans Cemetery.
Mrs. Rothermel was born in Garretsville, OH to the late Vernon and Edna Mitchell Freudiger. On November 29, 1958, she married the love of her life, George Rothermel and immediately delved into the life an encouraging and supportive Marine’s wife. Together, they started their family and she embraced her new role as a mother. They moved to Jacksonville in April of 1969, where they raised their children. She worked at the Marine Corps Exchange at New River Air Station for 10 years and was an active member of the Our Lady of Loreto Catholic Church. She was always very supportive of her husband’s involvement with the Knights of Columbus at the church, often cooking for meetings, and “get togethers”. She was also active in her children’s lives, again teaming up with her husband to help coach and volunteer on various sport organizations and advisory boards. Her family was her life and she loved cooking for them and being involved in anything they were doing.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, George.
She is survived by three children, Ginger Rothermel of Norfolk, VA, Rose Marshburn and her husband, Jody of Jacksonville and George Rothermel and his wife, Jennifer of Charlotte; three grandchildren, Taylor Rothermel, Haley Marshburn and Lauren Love; and three siblings, Verna Williams of Bristolville, OH, John Freudiger of Thousand Oaks, CA and Frances Harshman of Southington, OH.
The family will receive friends Sunday evening, August 2, 2026 from 6 – 8 PM at Jones Funeral Home, Jacksonville Chapel.
