Obituary

MAPLE HILL - Joann Marshburn, 84, of Maple Hill, NC, passed away Friday, July 31, 2026. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM on Wednesday, August 5, 2026 at Jones Funeral Home, Jacksonville Chapel. Entombment will follow at Onslow Memorial Park.

She was born on November 22, 1941, in Wilmington, NC, and throughout her life she carried with her the quiet strength of one who gave deeply to her family and to others. Her days were marked by devotion, faith, and a steadfast love that touched those around her in simple but lasting ways.

Joann worked as a seamstress and homemaker, and her life was centered on caring for the people she loved. Family was very important to her, and she treasured time spent with her children, grandchildren, and siblings. She especially enjoyed being with her siblings, and those shared moments held a special place in her heart. For more than 60 years, she was a member of Anchor Free Will Baptist Church, where her faith remained a meaningful part of her journey.

She found joy in gardening and in canning and preserving fruits and vegetables. She was a wonderful cook, and she loved being with her family in ways that reflected both warmth and generosity. Joann also had a gentle heart for helping others and was known for doing for people without seeking any recognition in return. Her life was a quiet testimony of service, love, and grace.

She is survived by her son, Timothy Marshburn, and wife Amy; her daughter, Emily Dodson, and husband Thad; grandchildren Stephen Marshburn, Sarah Dodson Naylor, Madyson Marshburn Vanhook, and Samuel Dodson; great-grandchildren Gage Vanhook, Kyal Naylor, and Olivia Dodson; and siblings Lucille Giddeons, Mitchell Padgett, Joyce Ward, Frances Brown, Rebecca Fowler, and David Padgett. She was preceded in death by her husband, Bill Marshburn; her parents, Joseph and Exie Padgett; brothers J.A. and Melvin Padgett; and sister Deborah Padgett Walker.

The family will receive friends Wednesday afternoon, prior to the service, beginning at 1:00 PM at the funeral home.

Though she will be deeply missed, Joann’s memory will continue to live on in the hearts of those who loved her. May her family find comfort in the love she gave so freely and in the hope of God’s everlasting care.
