JACKSONVILLE, NC - Lieutenant Colonel John T. Germain, retired United States Marine Corps, 64, passed away Sunday, June 4, 2017 in the comfort of his home after a year-long battle with brain cancer. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Thursday at Jones Funeral Home, Jacksonville Chapel. Burial will be announced for a later date at Arlington National Cemetery.
Lt. Colonel John T. Germain grew up in Boston, NY and has been a loyal fan of the Buffalo Bills ever since. As a child, he learned to play the drums and as a young adult toured with the band, Fancy Colors, among others. He kept this passion after joining the Marine Corps, joining bands all over the world wherever he was stationed. Most recently, he was the drummer for the local band Freeway. After he joined the United States Marine Corps he began his journey as a runner. Over the 30 plus years of running, he has completed 110 full marathons and countless other 5k, 10k and half marathon races. He was involved in the growth and development of Hope for the Warriors contributing countless hours to the success of the budding non-profit and was recently inducted into their Century Club. Lt. Colonel John T. Germain is a highly decorated veteran of the United States Marine Corps. His personal awards include one Legion of Merit, three Meritorious Service Medals, two Joint Commendation Medals, three Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medals, and three Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medals. His leadership, mentorship and ability to persevere through obstacles are legendary. Lt. Colonel John Germain's spirit and legacy are immeasurable and will live on in the community and in our hearts.
He served 30 years in the Marine Corps retiring in August 2008, and later returning as a civil servant for over five years. The discipline and patriotism he learned in the Marines never left him, as friends and family will attest.
Lt. Colonel John T. Germain is survived by his wife, Susan; and two children, Ryan and Heidi Germain. He also left behind his two brothers and sister, Charles, Frank and Cheryl Germain; as well as his sweet dog, Phoebe.
The family will receive friends Wednesday evening from 6 – 8 PM at the funeral home. The Germain family will also be organizing a celebration of life in the coming weeks and will send information as soon as possible.
