Obituary

JACKSONVILLE - Laurie Ball Phoebus, 90, of Jacksonville, died Monday, June 9, 2025, at ECU Medical Center in Greenville.  Graveside funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM on Tuesday, June 17, 2025, at Coastal Carolina State Veterans Cemetery with Pastor Jim Kelley officiating.

Mrs. Phoebus was born April 17, 1935, in Washington, DC to the late J. Lee Ball and Ivy Mays Ball.  As an adolescent, she was active in leadership roles including being President of the YMCA and KAPPA GAMMA for Bladensburg High School in Bladensburg, MD.  She lived a very interesting and action filled life, from being the head cheerleader moderator and secretary for many years for the Midgett Football League in Jacksonville to being a Senior Member of the United States Power and Sail Organization and New River Power Squadron.  During her time with the Power Squadron, she was proud to have received numerous awards, some with as many as 12 merit marks.  She was also an honorary member of the New River Yacht Club.  She was equally fond of her association and time spent being a member of the Red Hat Society in Jacksonville.  Though she was a proud and successful homemaker, she was the consummate volunteer, tirelessly sacrificing her time to help others.  She served as a Reserve Jacksonville Police Person and an Assistant Platoon Commander as well as the Treasurer for the Police Reserve.  She also volunteered for the Onslow County Board of Elections, volunteering as a poll worker at the Northwoods Precinct.  She was a librarian at Holy Spirit Catholic School and worked at the WJIK Bookshop.  Additionally, she served on the High School Advisory Board in the Home Economics Department.  Arguably her favorite thing was the time she spent at church.  She was a longtime member of Enon Chapel Southern Baptist Church, where she was a choir member and taught preschoolers for many years.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert L. Phoebus; her grandson, Colin Fitzpatrick; two brothers, Johnny Ball and Harvey Ball; and two sisters, Elizabeth White and Anne Cameron.

Survivors include her son, Rick Phoebus of Jacksonville; daughter, Cindy Fitzpatrick of Jacksonville; son, Ron Phoebus of Jacksonville, FL; five grandchildren, Taylor Fitzpatrick, Darci Peistrup, Dawn Frank, Morgan Phoebus and John Phoebus; and three great-grandchildren, Isaac James, Emerie Leigh and Easton Jordan.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Enon Chapel Baptist Church, 333 Freedom Way, Midway Park, NC 28544 or to the DVNF – Disabled Veterans National Foundation, 4601 Forbes Blvd., Suite #130, Lanham, MD 20706 (DVNF.org).
