Linda Susan Smith-Carter
March 12, 1952 – September 17, 2025
Linda Susan Smith-Carter, 73, of Jacksonville, North Carolina, passed away peacefully at her home on September 17, 2025. A celebration of her life will be held on Monday, October 6, 2025, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at Jones Funeral Home, Jacksonville.
Linda was born on March 12, 1952, at Camp Lejeune to the late Lt. Col. Willie G. Roberson and Betty V. Stuart Roberson. Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Willie G. Roberson Jr., and in-laws Snuffy and Edith Smith and Molly Bloyer.
She is survived by her devoted husband, David Carter; her children, Bryan Smith (Leslie) of Wilmington, NC, and Rachel Phillips (Cale) of Raleigh, NC; and her beloved grandchildren, Avery, Edith, Dylan, Maddy, Colin, and Gwen, who were the joy of her life. She also leaves behind her siblings, Cyndi Hamilton, Betsy Romero, Billy Smith, Aletha Pugh, Debbie Smith, and Nancy Cleghorn; sister-in-law, Denise Roberson, along with many extended family members and dear friends who cherished her.
Having grown up in a military family, Linda moved often, living in places like New Jersey and California before returning to North Carolina. As a young woman, Linda competed on horseback, a passion that reflected her adventurous spirit. She adored the outdoors—whether camping, fishing, or tending to her flourishing gardens of vegetables and flowers, a love inspired by her mother's work with the African Violet Society of America. She and her husband loved to cook together, often preparing fresh seafood caught by Dave, an avid sports fisherman, paired with vegetables grown from their garden. Together, they also loved hosting and entertaining friends, creating warm gatherings filled with laughter, good food, and lasting memories. Linda was especially known for her tomato pies, rutabagas, and macaroni salad, which became family favorites at every get-together.
Linda lived a vibrant and full life. She had a deep love for the ocean, often walking the beach to collect shells and shark teeth treasures. She was nicknamed "Unnie" by her brother who couldn't quite pronounce "honey." Her father-in-law affectionately called her "daughter dear," a nickname that perfectly reflected the warmth and love she inspired in everyone who knew her. Her circle of girlfriends, fondly known as the "Yayas," shared countless memories, laughter, and love throughout the years.
She never missed an exercise class, loved the thrill of a sports car, and delighted in bargain shopping. She was generous with her time, always putting others first, and never happier than when she was with her family. Her children and grandchildren were the apple of her eye—spoiling the little ones with trips to the dollar store and ice cream treats was one of her greatest joys.
For over 20 years, Linda faithfully served as the office manager at Pugh & Associates in Jacksonville, where she was respected for her professionalism, warmth and unwavering dedication.
Linda's faith was in Jesus as her Lord and savior and is now at peace with her Heavenly Father. She will be remembered for her kindness, her laughter, her devotion to her loved ones, and her ability to make any gathering feel like home.
