Lorne Nimer Mazzawi, 71, passed away peacefully at his home in Jacksonville, North Carolina, on July 29, 2026, under hospice care, surrounded by the love of his family.

Nimer was born in Beirut, Lebanon, on May 25, 1955, to Emile and Rosalind Mazzawi. He spent his early childhood overseas before immigrating with his family to the United States and settling in New Jersey. He graduated from Ramapo College of New Jersey with a bachelor's degree in Political Science and History.

Following graduation, Nimer answered the call to serve his country by joining the United States Marine Corps. He served honorably in Motor Transport for more than 20 years, including service in Lebanon. His military service reflected the values that guided his life—duty, honor, perseverance, and commitment to others. Even after his years in uniform, he remained deeply connected to many of the Marines with whom he served, maintaining lifelong friendships that he treasured.

For many years, Nimer also dedicated himself to the Boy Scouts of America as a Scoutmaster. He took great pride in mentoring young men, helping to shape their character, leadership, and love of the outdoors. His influence extended far beyond his own family, and many of the Scouts whose lives he touched continued to remember him with gratitude and respect. Nimer found joy in the outdoors and loved fishing, camping, and boating.

For more than 43 years, Lorne shared a devoted marriage with his beloved wife, Hedi. Together they built a loving family and raised four children. He is survived by his wife, Hedi; his son, Joseph, and his wife, Mandy; his daughter, Jeannette Swecker, and her husband, Brandon; his son, Thomas; his five cherished grandchildren, Jacob, Charlotte, Brandon, Eli, and Wade; his sister, Christina; his sister, Claudia Tomicki, and her husband, David; and his mother, Veronique Mazzawi. He was preceded in death by his beloved son, David, and by his parents, Emile Mazzawi and Rosalind Sayers.

Nothing brought Nimer greater joy than spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. He will be remembered for his steadfast love for his family, his faithful service to his country, his generous spirit, and the quiet strength, integrity, and resilience with which he lived his life. His legacy will continue through the family he loved so deeply, the Scouts he mentored, the Marines who called him friend, and the many lives he touched.

The family will receive friends for visitation on Tuesday, August 4, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Jones Funeral Home in Jacksonville, North Carolina.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Wednesday, August 5, at 9:00 a.m. at Infant of Prague Catholic Church in Jacksonville. The Rite of Committal and Military Honors will follow at 10:00 a.m. at Coastal Carolina State Veterans Cemetery in Jacksonville. Family and friends are then invited to gather for a reception at the Jacksonville Country Club beginning at 11:30 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to Disabled American Veterans (DAV) or the Marine Corps Museum of the Carolinas, in honor of Lorne's lifelong commitment to military service and his fellow veterans.
