Nov 16, 2026 — Aug 25, 2026
Swansboro, NC
Jacksonville- Mark James Hayes, 55, passed away August 25, 2026, at Onslow Memorial Hospital after a short illness. He was born November 16, 1970, at the Naval Hospital, Camp Lejeune, NC.
A private celebration of life will be held at a later date.
Mark excelled in his career in the hospitality industry. His warmth, empathy and ability to make people laugh endeared him to all his customers, friends and family. His artistic flair was appreciated at work and in people’s homes when he decorated for holidays and parties. His most recent service was to our military where he managed one of the dining halls at Camp Lejeune. His facility often won awards for appearance and hospitality.
He is survived by his mother Jane Cotton Hayes Taylor and his aunt Beth Cotton both of Swansboro, his cousin Travis Cotton of Boston, MA, Elizabeth and Christine Hayes of Richlands, NC. He also is survived by Carol Ann Wilkening who has been a dedicated caregiver and friend during his last chapter in life. His little dog, Poppy, was his WHOLE heart and his last concerns were for her happiness as she transitions to live with Carol Ann and her “pack” from whom she originally came.
He was preceded in death by his father, Pete Hayes; his cousin Greg Hayes; maternal grandparents, Jim and Jane Cotton of Swansboro; and his paternal grandmother, Ruth Hayes of Jacksonville.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the charity of one’s choice. Mark left his worldly goods to Finders Keepers in Jacksonville to help the women’s shelter.
