Maurie Updegrave Lachapelle passed away peacefully at Onslow Memorial Hospital on Wednesday December, 18th. 2024 surrounded by her brother Ken, her nephew Ken Jr., and her "Angel" cousin, Bill Hitch. Born on January 19th, 1944 in Jacksonville, NC Maurie was the daughter of Major Maurice S. Updegrave and Eleanor Hitch Updegrave. As the daughter of a Marine she lived in Washington, DC, Mechanicsburg, PA, Guam, Southern California, finally returning to Jacksonville as a teenager. She was a strong, determined woman who loved her family, her church, her friends, and all of nature in equal measure. She was an excellent seamstress, designing clothing for herself and her friends. She loved to bake, particularly around the Christmas holiday.
After her parents moved back to Jacksonville from the Isle of Palms, SC she brought great joy and comfort to them as an unofficial aide, caregiver, chauffeur, and travel partner. She said assisting them as they aged was one of the great joys of her life.
She is survived by her brother Ken Updegrave (Barbara) of Chapel Hill, NC, her nephews Ken Updegrave Jr. (Ginger) of Wilson, NC and Stuart Updegrave of Barcelona, Spain, her uncle, Bobby Hitch of Jacksonville, two great-nephews Turner and Erik Updegrave, one great, great niece Amelia Updegrave, the first girl born in the family in 78 years. She is also survived by several precious cousins and their children and grandchildren.
The family would like to thank the dedicated nurses and doctors at Onslow Memorial Hospital for the care they provided during her illness.
