Obituary

Michael “Mike” Lindsay Cannon, 66, passed away peacefully at his home on June 12, 2026, surrounded by the love of his family.

A Celebration of Life will be held Monday, June 22, 2026, at 1:00 p.m. at Kings Crossroads Church, 2080 Seven Pines Road, Fountain, NC. Family and friends are invited for food and fellowship following the service at Maccripine Country Club in Pinetops NC.

Mike was born on May 6, 1960, to the late Kathryn and Lindsay Cannon.

Mike dedicated his life to serving others through education, spending many years as a teacher, coach, and principal. He had a gift for connecting with young people and took great pride in helping students and athletes develop both on and off the court. Through his years of coaching youth basketball, he mentored countless young players, teaching lessons that extended far beyond the game.

Mike loved to travel and never met a stranger. He valued friendships deeply and had a remarkable ability to bring people together. A proud Heidelberg High School alumnus, he worked tirelessly over the years to reconnect classmates and organize reunions, helping generations of Heidelberg alumni maintain the bonds and memories that meant so much to them. His efforts created lasting friendships and strengthened a community that stretched across the country.

Above all else, Mike loved his family. He was a devoted partner, father, grandfather, brother, and friend whose greatest joy came from spending time with those he loved. Whether cheering on his grandchildren, sharing stories with friends, or planning his next trip, Mike lived life with enthusiasm, generosity, and a genuine love for people.

He leaves behind his beloved partner, Mary O’Connor; his sons, Tyler Cannon (Katie) and Brad Cannon; stepchildren, Shannon Cambra (Billy), Ryan O’Connor and Katie Martin (Robert); brothers, Paul Cannon and Lamont Cannon; grandchildren, Ryleigh Cannon, Hendrix Cannon, Emmie Cannon, Bryce Cannon, Drew Staton, Joseph Martin, Lilly Martin, and Jameson Martin; along with many cherished friends and extended family members.

Mike’s legacy lives on in the lives of the students he taught, the athletes he coached, the Heidelberg alumni he helped reconnect, and the family and friends who were fortunate enough to know and love him. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.

Electronic condolences may be shared with the family at Jones Funeral Home.
