Naomi Ruth
Thigpen
Jan 12, 1936 — Aug 20, 2026
Jacksonville
Naomi “Ruth” Thigpen, 90, of Jacksonville, North Carolina, formerly of Burnwell, West Virginia, passed away August 20, 2026, surrounded by love and the memories she created over a lifetime lived fully and fearlessly. The family will have a fellowship, celebration of life in the backyard on Saturday August 20, 2026, starting at 4:30pm. 1728 Catherine Lake Rd, Jacksonville, NC 28540.
Born January 12, 1936, Ruth carried the spirit of her mountain roots and class with her wherever she went. A retired insurance manager with over 30 years of dedicated service, Ruth was never one to slow down. She owned multiple businesses throughout her life, poured her energy into every endeavor, and embraced adventure with open arms. Racing was one of her greatest joys—she proudly competed in powder puff races in her younger years, proving she had both grit and fire. Ruth lived boldly, laughed often, and loved deeply. She was preceded in death by the love of her life, Eldrage (Bill) Marchel Thigpen; her son Gregory Edward Burgess; her brothers Allen Christy and Shirley Christy; and her sisters Juanita Christy, Janet Bostic and Wanda Waters. Ruth is survived by her daughter Sherry Schnabel, her son Steve Burgess, and Amy Pierce, whom she lovingly considered a daughter for many years. She also leaves behind four cherished grandchildren: Ruthi Burgess, Michael Schnabel, Krista Schnabel, and Raymond Milam.
Ruth never met a stranger. Her warmth, generosity, and radiant spirit, made her a light in the lives of everyone she encountered. She was an angel on earth—steadfast, joyful, and endlessly kind. Her legacy is one of love, laughter, and unwavering strength. She will remain forever in the hearts of those blessed enough to know her. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Lower Cape Fear Hospice and LifeCare and the Veteran Memorial at Lower Cape Fear Hospice.
