In Loving Memory of Norma Jean King

June 6, 1941 – October 21, 2026

Norma Jean King was born on June 6, 1941, to Raymond and Essie Gillispie of South Charleston, West Virginia. She lived a full and remarkable life, leaving behind a legacy of love, generosity, friendship, and a spirit that could never be tamed.

Norma was preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, Franklin Delano King I. Together, they built a life filled with family, memories, and the kind of love that lasts a lifetime.

She is survived by her daughter, Robin King-Thiele (Robert Thiele), and her son, Franklin King II (Nancy King), and her three wonderful grandchildren: Ryan Thiele, Erika King-Paxton (Connor), and Grant King, who brought her immeasurable joy and pride. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews, all of whom she loved dearly.

Throughout her life, Norma called four states home: West Virginia, Tennessee, North Carolina, and Florida. Wherever life took her, she left behind a circle of cherished friendships that spanned generations and state lines. She had a special gift for connecting with people, making friends wherever she went, and leaving an impression that was impossible to forget. She was fiercely herself but had a heart that made room for others and a spirit that refused to be confined. An avid quilter and baker, she found joy in creating things with her hands and sharing her talents with those she loved. Whether stitching together a quilt or filling a kitchen with the comforting aroma of a pound cake, she had a way of making people feel cared for and at home. The world is a smaller place without Norma but her spirit lives on in the people she loved, the lives she touched, and the stories that will forever be told in her honor.

The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the compassionate staff at Arbor Landing in Hampstead, North Carolina, and the Lower Cape Fear Hospice Inpatient Pavilion. Thank you for treating Norma like family, for your kindness and care, and for surrounding her and those who loved her with such compassion. Your support will never be forgotten.

Donations to Lower Cape Fear Hospice can be made in lieu of flowers at 1414 Physicians Dr, Wilmington, NC 28401. There will be a celebration of life for the family scheduled at a future date yet to be determined.
