Samuel Arnthon Dean Atkinson, 13, of Hubert, passed away on Friday, May 29th, 2026, at UNC Chapel Hill. Per the family’s request, all services will be held privately.

Samuel will be remembered for his quick wit, love of horror movies, witty sense of humor, and the joy he brought to everyone who knew him. Though his time on earth was far too short, the memories he created with family and friends will be cherished forever.

He was preceded in death by his father, Kenny Atkinson; maternal grandparents, Bo and Karen McGinnis; and his paternal grandparents, Ronald and Sherry Atkinson.

Samuel is survived by his mother, Jaci Atkinson; his step-father, Gary Grainger, Jr; his sisters, Makayla Atkinson, and Mary Grace Atkinson; brother, Matthew Nichols; grandparents, Joy and John Bennett, Kimberly Martin, and Gary Grainger, Sr.; aunts and uncles, Kayla Camden and spouse Jay Jeffrey, Indya Bennett and spouse Mark Spry, Chris Bennett and spouse Megan, Kim Hanif and spouse Jamie, Jerry Grainger and Dacinda Grainger; his dog, Pibble; and numerous cousins, extended family members, and friends who loved him dearly.
