Obituary

Swansboro- SgtMaj John Joseph McGovern, 61, of Swansboro, North Carolina passed away peacefully with his family by his side on Wednesday, September 10, 2025, at Duke University Hospital. He was born June 1, 1964, in Bay Shore, New York.

John faithfully and honorably served his country in the United States Marine Corps, retiring as a Sergeant Major after a 32-year career. After enlisting in 1982, John's career saw him serve the duties of a Senior Drill Instructor at Parris Island, Platoon Sergeant at 3d Reconnaissance Battalion, USCENTCOM for ground operations in the Middle East and Africa, Marine Barracks Washington (8th&I), Ground Defense GITMO, and the Staff NCO Academy, Quantico. He later served as SgtMaj of VMFA 122, and then as the 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit Sergeant Major. He deployed in support of operations in Iraq, Afghanistan, Iran, Somalia, and many other locations around the world. He retired as the MARCENT (FWD) Sergeant Major in 2013. John truly loved his job mentoring and training his Marines; although he may have at times seemed intimidating and aggressive in nature, it was always done with the purpose of improving those under his charge. His intentions were always to see his Marines succeed and to this day he has many of his Marines reach out to him continuing to seek guidance and thank him for the impact he has had on their lives.

John was a loving husband and father, prioritizing the success of his sons as they grew and approached different hurdles and life events, ensuring they were ready to take on the world and create successful lives of their own. As an avid sports fan and athlete, John loved coaching and playing basketball, soccer, and golf with Kathy, Bryce and Kyle. He enjoyed watching and supporting Florida Gators football and UNC Tar Heels basketball. He loved challenging his sons with a few games of billiards in his characteristically competitive nature.

He is preceded in death by his parents Francis and Catherine McGovern, and his brother James McGovern. He is survived by his wife of 32 years, Kathy McGovern; and sons, Bryce McGovern (Sydne) and Kyle McGovern (Mattie).

John won the fight against Lymphoma in late 2024, but lost a hard fought battle against Acute Myeloid Leukemia a short six months later. We are grateful for all the efforts and care provided by the doctors and nursing staff at Duke University Hospital. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Duke Cancer Institute.
