Obituary

Shawn James Papenfuse, lovingly known as "Shawnshine," passed away unexpectedly at his home on Friday, June 20, 2025, at the age of 35, due to an undiagnosed heart condition. His sudden passing has left his family and loved ones heartbroken and shocked.

Born on November 30, 1989, in West Palm Beach, Florida, Shawn brought joy and warmth to everyone around him from the very beginning. In 2003, his family relocated to Jacksonville, North Carolina—his father's hometown—to be closer to extended family. Though he attended Northside High School, Shawn's spirit was never meant to be confined indoors. He felt most at peace surrounded by nature—whether fishing, camping, or kayaking. The great outdoors was where he truly came alive.

Shawn was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Ormond Revere and Elizabeth Taylor Pines; his paternal grandparents, Donald Bailey and Marjorie Mudgett Papenfuse; and his uncle, Tim Papenfuse.

He is survived by his devoted parents, Matthew James and Susan Lori Papenfuse; his siblings Aaron, Cody, Luke, Melanie McDuffie, and Zachary Zapata; his wife, Ceirra Papenfuse, and her daughter, Charlie; and his beloved daughter, Willow Finley Papenfuse—the light of his life and the reason his heart beat so fiercely.

To Shawn, family wasn't just important—it was everything. Whether working proudly alongside his father in the family carpentry business or during his time at JE Thomas Moving, Shawn put his heart into whatever he did. His craftsmanship and hard work reflected his deep commitment to those he loved.

He was known for his big heart, kind soul, and ability to make others laugh. Rarely angry, always giving, Shawn had a way of making everyone feel seen and cared for. His joy came not from material things but from making people happy. He was always on the lookout for the perfect gift for someone—simply because it brought him joy to give.

Affectionately called "Shawnshine" from a young age, that nickname stuck because it captured exactly who he was—a bright, steady light in the lives of so many.

More than anything, Shawn cherished being a father. Willow was his world, his pride, and his joy. She became his "Shawnshine," just as he had been to so many others.

His life motto was simple but profound: "Live simply. Love deeply." And that's exactly how he lived.

Shawn had a deep and abiding faith in God. As we grieve this tremendous loss, we find comfort in the words inspired by Genesis 5:24: "He walked with God, and was no more, because God took him."

A Celebration of Life will be held this November to honor Shawn on what would have been his 36th birthday. Family and friends will gather not to say goodbye, but to celebrate the beautiful life he lived and the love he so freely gave.

This is not farewell, Shawnshine—this is see you later. For those who believe, God promises the gift of eternal life. Until we meet again, we will carry your light in our hearts.
