Sondra Jean
Payne Letterle
June 11, 1954 – July 10, 2025
MAYSVILLE - Sondra Jean Payne Letterle, 71, of Maysville, passed away Thursday, July 10, 2025 at her home. A private Celebration of Life will be held at a later date, when she will be lovingly reunited with her cherished sons, Jeffrey and Matthew Roberson.
Mrs. Letterle was born on June 11, 1954, in Asheville, NC, the daughter of the late Albert and Iva Jean Cassada Payne.
Sondra was a gifted creator who poured her heart into everything she made—from knitting and wreath making to sea glass art, card crafting, and countless other handmade treasures. She found joy in creating beauty from the simplest things and shared that joy freely with those she loved. Her creativity was boundless, and her hands were rarely still.
She spent much of her career as a medical transcriptionist and early on also played a dedicated role in the Roberson family's motel business, but her greatest joy was always found in time spent with her family and dear friends. A devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, Sondra's love was steady, strong, and unconditional.
She is survived by her husband of 21 years, John Letterle of the home; her daughter and son-in-law, Jennifer and Terry Cole, Jr. of Swansboro; her treasured grandchildren, Anna and Trace; and her sister, Sharon Cox, and family, of Asheville, NC.
Sondra was a survivor of deep personal loss, carrying her grief with grace and quiet strength. We take comfort in imagining the joyful reunion she now shares with her sons—and with her beloved fur babies, especially Tucker and Rachel—who no doubt greeted her with wagging tails and loving hearts.
She loved deeply, gave generously, and will be missed beyond measure.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to a local charity of choice. In honor of her special love for dachshunds, a contribution to a dachshund rescue organization would be a beautiful tribute.
