Thomas E.
Ottaway
July 14, 1953 – July 14, 2025
HOLLY RIDGE - Thomas E. Ottaway, 72, of Holly Ridge, passed away peacefully Monday, July 14, 2025, at New Hanover Regional Medical Center in Wilmington, surrounded by his family. Funeral services will be held on Friday, July 18, 2025, at 3:00 p.m. at Liberty Baptist Church in Holly Ridge, with Pastor Chris Schneider officiating. Burial will follow at the Ottaway Family Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.
He was born on July 14, 1953, to the late Samuel Adrian and Livia (Lee) Peccini Ottaway of Holly Ridge. Thomas owned and operated Ottaway Electrical Service for over 50 years, serving all of eastern North Carolina. He loved wiring houses and enjoyed talking with his clients and contractors. In 2002, he started and operated a sod farm. He loved watching things grow— especially grass, corn, and sunflowers.
Known to many as "Big Tommy," he enjoyed fishing and spent many days taking his kids and grandkids to the creek. His favorite activities included riding go-karts with his family in the mountains—where he was very competitive—and celebrating the 4th of July with food, fireworks, and family. His best hobby was always finding something for others to do.
Thomas was preceded in death by his parents, Adrian and Lee Ottaway; his sister, Adrianne Carrell; and his brother, Douglas Ottaway.
He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Gay Ottaway; his son, Thomas A. Ottaway (Tara) of Hampstead, and their children: Adrian, Avery, and Abraham; his daughter, Andrea O. Schneider (Chris) of Holly Ridge, and their children: Elijah and Miranda; and his daughter, Rachel O. Evans (Steven) of Sneads Ferry, and their children: Esther and Elliot. He is also survived by his brothers, Barry Ottaway (Wendy) of Holly Ridge and Gary Ottaway (Cathy) of Jacksonville, along with numerous nieces and nephews.
The family extends their heartfelt thanks for all the prayers and kind words shared during this time. Your support has been a great comfort and is deeply appreciated.
