William "Matthew" Chalkley of Nash County, NC passed away on April 12, 2022.   Matthew was born in 1988 at Camp Pendleton, CA and moved to Jacksonville, NC in 1990 where he grew up and spent most of his life.  He graduated from Northside High School in 2011 and lived at home for several years before moving on to live in several group homes in the Jacksonville and Rocky Mount, NC areas. Matthew was at heart a gentle soul who loved to laugh and make others laugh. His infectious smile and zany sense of humor touched all who knew him. Preferring the simpler things, Matthew enjoyed magazines and books, collecting cans to crush and recycle, doing crafts, going for walks, and doing yard work. Matthew also truly loved just meeting and talking with people. His memory was sharp and he never forgot names, birthdays or other details gleaned from conversation. Besides his parents, William and Cynthia Chalkley of Jacksonville NC, Matthew is loved and dearly missed by: his brother Andrew Chalkley, of Jacksonville; NC, sister Katherine Hernandez, brother-in-law Gabriel Hernandez, nephew Manny Hernandez and Niece Kayleigh Hernandez of Mountain Home; ID; great-grandparents Harold and Edith Greer of Roanoke, VA.; aunts Christine Chalkley, Eileen Wardwell, Ellen Lara, Clare Josaitis (Bob); uncles John Chalkley (Donna), Robert Chalkley (Nan); David Greer (Jean) and cousins Ann Wardwell, Clare Wardwell, Sarah Wardwell, Ella Wardwell, Laura Wardwell, Marie Chalkley, Erin Chalkley, Katie Burke (Frank) and Zora Chalkley.

A Celebration of Life service will be held at Jones Funeral Home, 303 Chaney Ave., Jacksonville, NC on Saturday, September 3, 2022 at 1:00 pm.
