JACKSONVILLE- Debra Lynne Ashford passed away peacefully on June 1, 2021 at her Jacksonville, North Carolina home following a valiant year long battle with cancer.
She is survived by her mother, Eileen Dahl, husband Craig Ashford, her daughter Rachel (Speranzi) Rusch, and many friends who she considered family.
Debra was born on February 20, 1957 in Norfolk, Virginia to parents Jed and Eileen Marcum. Later in life Debra and Eileen settled in Scottsdale, Arizona until Debra made her way to California where she met and married a Marine, and later had a daughter, Rachel. After many military moves later, Debra ended up in Jacksonville, NC, where she later met Craig Ashford and they married in 2006. Debra was a great support and encouraged Craig during his time as a law enforcement officer as well as after his retirement. They enjoyed traveling to spend time with friends, but also simple, quiet times at home.
Debra was full of life and always had an encouraging word for everyone. She had a laugh you could never forget and could be heard across a room full of people. She was an amazing cook and baker, enjoyed being active in her church community, loved to work in her garden, and loved spending time with her family and friends. She held many different jobs over the course of her life and could easily adapt to any situation. While living in New York, she volunteered as a Firefighter/EMT and was very proud to have been able to serve her community. Debra was especially proud to be able to share another bond with her daughter, Rachel, after she followed in her mom’s footsteps of becoming an EMT.
Anyone that met Debra as drawn to her lively spirit. She was very selfless, compassionate and generous. She felt it was important to help others in any way possible but always remained humble. Above all else, Debra was the most amazing mother, wife, and friend. She will be missed forever by all who knew and loved her.
Services will be held at Living Hope Community Church on Tuesday, June 8, 2021 as followed: Visitation from 9:00 to 10:00 AM followed by services at 10:00 AM with interment following the services at Onslow Memorial Park at 11:00 AM.
