We are deeply sorry for your loss - the staff at Jacksonville
JACKSONVILLE - Delma Grady Collins, 74, of Jacksonville, North Carolina, passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, June 15, 2022. But before leaving this world to be with his Lord and Savior, he created a home built upon love and devotion to family, and lived a life centered upon justice and service to others.
Delma was born on June 3, 1948, to Ivey and Lucy Collins in Onslow County, the county that would later be his primary mission field for a life marked by servant leadership. After graduating from Jacksonville High School, he continued his education at North Carolina Weslyan University where he earned a Bachelor’s degree. He furthered his education by attending and graduating from the FBI Academy. Delma was proud to serve alongside both civilians and sworn officers at the Jacksonville Police Department through work in almost every division. From street cop to Deputy Chief of Police, neither title nor rank ever interfered with Delma’s ability to connect with the people around him. After 31 years of service, “retirement” from JPD in 2001 was a bit of a misnomer as Delma continued to invest in the community for 8 years as an Onslow County Commissioner and 8 years as a NC Probation and Parole Officer.
In 1992, Delma was blessed to find both love and the most meaningful friendship of his life in one person, Debi. They were married in 1998. As Delma and Debi wed, he also became the father of Misty Williams and Eric Brown and later, the beloved Pap Pap to his grandchildren, Madison and Mia Williams. His most recent days have been spent enjoying true retirement, writing poetry, spending time with his family, playing with his favorite pups and enjoying breakfast with his friends (the boys).
Delma is preceded in death by his son, Dana Ryan Collins; his parents, Lucy and Ivey Collins; his sister, Norma Thompson; and his brother, Douglas Collins. He is survived by many loving family members, including his wife, Debi Collins of Jacksonville; brother and sister in law, James and Peggy Collins of Youngsville, North Carolina; brother and sister in law, Gary and Chris Collins of Clearwater, Florida; daughter and son in law, Misty and Phillip Williams of Jacksonville, North Carolina; son and daughter in law, Eric Brown and Jessica Misora of St. Augustine, Florida; his grandchildren, Madison and Mia Williams; and many cherished cousins, nieces, and nephews.
Officer. Investigator. Deputy Chief. Commissioner. While Delma was known by many names, his greatest loves called him Friend, Husband, Brother, Uncle, Pap Pap, and Dad. And now, his Lord calls him, “Good and Faithful Servant.”
A service will be held at 1pm on June 21, 2022 at Catalyst Church on Gum Branch Road in Jacksonville, to remember and honor the life of Delma Grady Collins.
