Swansboro – Donald McKay Gordon, 89, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, July 14, 2021 at Onslow Memorial Hospital.
Don was born December 31, 1931 in Arlington, VA, a son to the late, Earl and Ethel Stripes Gordon.
A Celebration of Life service will be held on Sunday, July 25, 2021 at 6:30 PM at Swansboro First Baptist Church with Pastor Stan Budd officiating.
Don served his country in the US Air Force from 1951 to 1955. During his military service he was a catcher for the Air Force baseball team that traveled throughout Europe. He returned home and began a career with AT&T as a lineman. He married Hannah (Ann) Sulcer in 1955. He worked on numerous NASA telephone systems during the Apollo Space Program, as well as the White House during the LBJ time and the Pentagon. He retired and moved to Cocoa Beach, FL in 1985.
An avid sports fan, Don was a Redskins football season ticket holder, dedicate fan of the Washington National’s and Chicago Cubs baseball teams
After his wife Ann passed in 2002, he remained in Florida until 2009, when he married Carole. He loved to spend time with his family and friends. He also served alongside Carole as she led the Senior Breakfast Group for years at Cape Carteret Baptist Church, with her doing Backpack Friends and most importantly, until the pandemic, assisted Carole with the Good News Club after school program at White Oak and Bogue Sound Elementary Schools. At Swansboro First Baptist they worked Vacation Bible School together and recently had begun teaching children classes on Sunday mornings. When not involved in these activities, he was devoted to his yard and could be constantly seen working in it most days.
He is survived by his devoted wife of these past 12 years, Carole Pearson Swartz Gordon of the home. He was preceded by his son Wayne Hammond and is survived by his sister Pat Youngblood of Boise, Idaho and daughter-in-law Joan Hammond of Springfield, Virginia; granddaughters Lynne Batiste (Dan) of Gainesville, Virginia and her children Michael Glushko of Bristow, Virginia, and Amanda Langhorne (Jason) of Marshall, Virginia; Dawn Berkley (David) of Springfield, Virginia; Marla Hammond of Rockville, Maryland. He is also survived by his stepdaughter, Cindy Tomlinson (David) of Swansboro; step-grandchildren Amber Metcalf (Enoch) of Swansboro and their children, Madelynn, Abe, and Jillian Metcalf; and Joshua Tomlinson (Hannah) of Jacksonville, Florida.
Don’s family would like to express a special thank you to Swansboro EMS and the doctors, nurses and other staff of the Onslow Memorial Hospital Emergency Room, ICU and Ward 4 North for their kindness, compassion and support to his family. In particular, the concept of Comfort Care and the ability for out of town family to visit as well as local friends is a remarkable concept that was much appreciated.
A graveside service will be held at Leeds Cemetery family plot in Hume, Virginia on Saturday, July 31, 2021.
