Giovanna (Jennie) Christiano Bates passed away peacefully at home on June 1, 2021. Jennie was born, also at home, on June 24, 1930, the daughter of Rose (DeMuro) and Antonio Christiano. She and her brother, the late Alphonso (Fonsie) Christiano, grew up in the Italian neighborhood of Chickahominy in Greenwich, CT. After graduating from Greenwich High School in 1948, she married her beloved husband Edward (Eddie) Bates in 1952. They were married for nearly 70 years when Eddie predeceased her last December. Jennie and Eddie raised their family in Banksville, NY. After retirement, they relocated to Jacksonville, NC, where she loved receiving visits from their family and friends from back home.
She was a wonderful Italian cook, an expert seamstress and filled our house with everything that made it a home, especially laughter. We will miss her dry sense of humor and unfailingly positive attitude. It is an undisputed fact that her meatballs were the best in the U.S. and her enthusiastic rendition of “Happy Birthday” among the worst.
She leaves behind her loving family: daughter Nancy and her husband Steve Dapkiewicz, of Stoneham, MA; son Joe and his wife Arlyne Bates, of Jacksonville, NC; four granddaughters: Jen (Dean) Shatley, Amanda Duffy, Amalia (Michael Murphy) and Claire (Austin Heller) Dapkiewicz; and two great-granddaughters, Cate and Maddie Shatley. She also leaves behind her dear cousin Phyllis Traweek and her life-long best friend, Viola ‘Be’ Belmonte. Nieces, nephews, cousins and godchildren all called her Aunt Jennie. To have Jennie as a friend was to have a friend for life, and she took such great care of us all.
