Haywood “Keith” Pittman passed away unexpectedly on Thursday morning, February 6, 2020 surrounded by the warmth of his wife, family, and friends.
A funeral service will be held at 3:00 pm Sunday, 02/09/20 at Jones Funeral Home of Richlands with pastor Chris Harris officiating, with visitation being held one hour prior to the service. Burial will be private per family request.
A graduate of Richlands High School and East Carolina University,
Keith continued to stay connected to his beloved Onslow County while building a
new life in Pitt County. Keith worked for ECU’s Department of
Surgery for 30 years—15 years studying the immunology of transplanted organ
rejection and 15 years studying cancer immunology. He recently finished
training the first c.difficile detection dog in the United States, which is
working to save lives through its weekly service at Vidant Medical Center. When
not helping others through his medical ingenuity, he could always be found in a
field somewhere, either horseback or on foot, trailing behind a classy gun dog.
While english pointers were his preference, with their poker straight tails and
high heads, he was eager to see every dog achieve their full potential and
worked with dogs and people all across the nation through his business Pinelog
A man of integrity who knew God as his constant companion and his
wife as his best friend, Keith found joy in the everyday act of living.
He is preceded in death by his mother and father, Sallie Isabelle
and Burnell Pittman, and his brother, Jimmy Lee Pittman. He is survived by his
wife, Laura Pittman, a sister, Jan Humphrey, and his true brother, Greg Pittman
and his wife Miranda.
