EMERALD ISLE - Homer "Al" Allen, 80, of Emerald Isle, passed away on Sunday, June 5, 2022 at his home. Graveside funeral services, with military honors, will be held at 10:00 AM on Friday, June 10, 2022 at Coastal Carolina State Veterans Cemetery, with Rev. Daniel Flynn officiating.
Born in Henderson County, NC, Homer grew up in Spartanburg, SC and graduated from Fairfield High School. He enlisted in the Marine Corps at 18 years old, serving over 20 years in several notable deployments including Iceland and Vietnam where he received an officer’s commission. In 1970, he met the love of his life, Donna Demming. They were married in 1971, and together they had two sons: David and Phillip. Homer earned a Master's degree in accounting from the University of West Florida. After retiring from the Marine Corps as a Captain, he worked for The Blue Angels in Pensacola, Florida. He then moved to a job with Rockwell International at New River, NC finally retiring from CACI International in Jacksonville, NC, where he worked for over 20 years. In his retirement years, Homer and Donna purchased a vacation cabin in Bostic, NC, and spent many relaxing weeks enjoying the beautiful scenery and slower pace of life.
Homer was a strong, determined, and hard-working man who seemed very reserved on the surface but would tease and joke with a merry twinkle in his eye. He enjoyed spending time with his family, working outside in the yard, taking long golf cart rides, and staying up-to-date with the latest news. Friday nights will never be the same without the hot dogs and hamburgers he would grill up for his legendary "Friday night special."
He was predeceased by his parents, Homer Alvin Allen and Eva Ward Allen; and his sisters Mary (Cotton) Reid, and Mildred (Charles) Masters.
His loss is mourned by his wife of 51 years, Donna Demming Allen; his sons, David (Christy) Allen and Phillip Allen; his grandchildren, Benjamin Allen and Catherine Allen; his siblings, Margaret (Frank) Hart and Frank (Linda) Allen; his nieces, Debra Sox, Jenny (John) Evans, and Amanda (Jay) Schroeder; several grand-nieces; and a grand-nephew.
The family will receive friends Friday morning, prior to the service, from 9:00 - 9:45 AM, at Jones Funeral Home, Jacksonville Chapel.
