Richlands, NC - Kathy Brett Koonce of Richlands, 65, passed away peacefully in her home on Wednesday, February 3, 2021.

Kathy was preceded in death by her father Howard Brett and her husband of 34 years, her college sweetheart Michael Koonce.  She is survived by her loving children, Clay Koonce (Courtney), Mandy Smith (Jason) her mother Rockie Lee Brett and her brother Stan Brett (Pam) of Murfreesboro NC. KK will be greatly missed by her five grandchildren, Hudson, Finley, Fisher, Holden and Hunter.

Kathy was dedicated to the Lord and shared her faith with others throughout her life and during her courageous battle with Gliosarcoma. Her spirit and positive outlook on life never wavered. She was a member of the First Baptist Church where she taught Sunday School for many years.

Kathy was a dedicated teacher for over 30 years and retired from Duplin County Schools. After her retirement, she traveled throughout the country with her many friends and family. Kathy enjoyed spending time with her family at Emerald Isle and sharing her love of the beach with her grandchildren.

A celebration of life will be held at First Baptist Church of Richlands in the Family Life Center on Saturday, February 6 at 1:00pm. Due to COVID precautions, the service will be socially distanced (masks required) and live streamed on the church's Facebook page.  The graveside service will be held at a later time for immediate family.

Our family is grateful for the excellent treatment and care Kathy received at The Preston Robert Tisch Brain Tumor Center at Duke.
