Obituary

MGySgt Edward "Big Ed" Charles Fritts, USMC (Ret), 69, of Jacksonville passed away Thursday, 14 January 2021 while undergoing a surgical procedure.

Big Ed was born in the territory of Honolulu, Hawaii on 12 March 1951. Big Ed served proudly in the Marine Corps, was a Vietnam Veteran, deployed in support of Desert Shield/Desert Storm, and retired in 1999 after 30 years of service to Jacksonville, NC. 

His awards include a Meritorious Service Medal, Navy Achievement Medal w/1 star, Marine Corps Expeditionary Medal, National Defense Service Medal w/1 star, Navy Unit Commendation Medal w/5 stars, Meritorious Unit Commendation Medal w/3 stars, Vietnam Service Medal w/2 stars, Vietnam Campaign Medal w/ Device, Good Conduct Medal w/9 stars, Sea Service Deployment Ribbon w/3 stars, Southwest Asia Service Medal w/2 stars, Kuwait Liberation Medal, Kuwait Liberation Medal (K), Recruiting Ribbon, Rifle Expert Badge 2nd award, Pistol Marksmanship Badge and a Navy/Marine Corps Parachutist Insignia.

In his spare time he enjoyed reading about WWI and WW II as well as building models of various equipment, vehicles and weapons from multiple countries.  He was a member of the New River Harley Davidson Owner's Group (HOG) Chapter #2000 and loved to ride his trike on road trips.

While retired, he earned a Masters degree in Education and PhD in Education and Distance Learning.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John Jr. and Elaine Fritts; brother, John F. Fritts, III; and sister, Drusilla E. McCormick.  Survivors include his son, Eduardo Fritts of Palma De Mallorca, Spain; sisters, Kristina E. Patterson, Mary E. Bender, and Dorthy J. Cole; several nieces, nephews, cousins and very good friends.

Big Ed is interred at Coastal Carolina State Veterans Cemetery, Jacksonville, NC.
