Mr. Samuel P. Fields, age 89 of Jacksonville, NC passed away Thursday
April 28th, 2022 at Kempton Assisted Living / Memory Care Facility. He was born April 18, 1933 in Big Chimney, WV. Mr. Fields joined the United States Marine Corps in 1953 and retired in 1973 after serving 20 years. While in the military, he served two tours of duty in Vietnam and The Cuban Crisis. He was awarded the Navy and Marine Corp Commendation Medal (combat V). He also was awarded the Navy Achievement Medal with two stars along with several other awards and citations. Following the retirement from the Marine Corps, he became a licensed plumber and owner of All - Care Plumbing Company. He was also the owner of This and That Bargain Shop located in Jacksonville, NC.
Upon full retirement, he enjoyed woodworking, gardening and spending time with family. Sam was a devoted family man and friend to many.
One of his greatest joys was serving as an Ordained Deacon, Sunday School
Superintendent and Teacher in his local church. He was a member of the Bethlehem Baptist Church.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Clara Fields of WV. Also, his nine brothers and four sisters. He is also preceded in death by his son, William P. Fields. He is survived by his wife, Janet D. Fields, of 67 years. He is survived by three daughters, Cynthia Ruvio and husband Stephen of Jacksonville, NC, Beverly Smith and husband Jeff of Jacksonville, NC and Arlene Bulla (Pete) of Jacksonville, NC; grandchildren: Sammy Fields (Jennifer), Ashlyn Hansley (John), Stephanie Harley (Cameron),
Joshua Smith, Kristine Ruvio-Gibbs(Dayshawn) , John Bulla (Kara), Dino Bulla (Amber); Great Grandchildren: John Allen Hansley IV, Madison Kellum, Marlee Gibbs, Avery Hansley, Reyia Hope Bulla, William Fields II, Roman Bulla, Isabella Harley. All of whom he loved and cherished. He was better known as Dad and Watash by his children and as PawPaw and The Man of Steel by his grand and great grand children.
A going home celebration will be held at 12:30 pm Wednesday, May 4, 2022 at Jones Funeral Home in Jacksonville, NC. The service will be conducted by Rev. Damon Williamson and Rev. Daniel Flynn. Interment will be at Coastal Carolina State Veterans Cemetery in Jacksonville, NC with full military honors.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 pm, Tuesday, May 3, 2022 at Jones Funeral Home, Jacksonville, NC. The family will receive friends after the service at the deceased home. In lieu of flowers, you may donate to the Alzheimer’s Foundation.
